Russian investigator handed 16 years in jail for accepting 1,032-bitcoin bribe

Russia has sentenced a former chief researcher to 16 years in jail after he was caught taking bribes price 1,032 bitcoins, now price $65 million, from a gaggle of hackers.
Marat Tambiyev was accused final 12 months of accepting the bitcoin bribe from a duo concerned within the Infraud Group hacking group that he investigated whereas working for the Investigative Committee of Russia.
As a part of the deal, Tambiyev agreed to not confiscate the group’s illegally obtained bitcoin. He then obtained half of the unlawful property on April 7, 2022.

In 2023, Russian authorities found bitcoin on a Mac below a file known as ‘Pension’. The authorities concluded that the quantity made no sense as his job might solely have earned him cash 11.7 million rubles ($144,000).
Tambiyev reportedly denies the allegations and claims he was framed. He plans to enchantment the conviction, together with Kristina Lyakhovenko, a colleague who was jailed for 9 years for her position in the identical case.
